Suji Halwa can also be known by the names of Rava Sheera, Rava Sheera, both in Western India and Rava Kesari in South India. The recipe is basically identical, with a few ingredients being changed from time to time.

While semolina, or rava is the main ingredient. In certain variations, there is milk in place of water. This is often referred to"milk Kesari. To enhance the flavor, typically cardamom powder is added.

The halwa can also be made to commemorate the occasion of auspiciousness, or to celebrate a pooja. It could be utilized for an occasion like Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi or any other religious celebration that is being held in your home or just to enjoy some sweets. It also is a great breakfast alternative or dessert following dinner.

Because this is a simple to make halwa recipe that is quick and easy, there is no excuse or reason for cooking the dish. I make sooji halwa frequently to use as a Bhog or an naivedyam to give to gods.

We prepare Suji Halwa as well as puri to celebrate the Navami ceremony which is a part of the Navratri celebration. Kala chana too is also made. On this day, we present Kala chana, suji Halwa, as well as puri to the little girls (kanjak) that represent the Goddess Mother.

The rava kesari, that is popularin South India usually has an artificial orange color as an added. You can however create similar rava kesari with natural coloring agents like threads of saffron, and saffron powder.

Kesar or threads of saffron can be added to sooji halwas like the one in this picture. Saffron Suji Halwa.

Alongside this recipe for halwa I also make different kinds of halwa recipes, too. I don't make them every day, however, I do make them whenever we have puja, or during times of celebration , or simply for an indulgence.

Sooji Halwa Proportions

Sooji Halwa is typically produced in large quantities during festive or religious occasions. If you are planning to make a huge quantity and wish to create an enormous amount it is a specific proportion that you must adhere to.

The proportion of suji to water in relation to Ghee to Ghee is 1:1:2:0.5 in the glass or cup measure. I slightly differ from this ratio and include a bit of Ghee, but with less sugar.

  • Sugar for 1 cup sooji (or the rava) I would recommend adding 2/3 or 3/4 cups of sugar. This means that the suji Halwa is not as sweet or sweet. A cup sugar gives a very sweet flavor.
  • Ghee I also add 2/3 cup of ghee for each one cup suji. For me, 2/3 cup is an adequate amount of Ghee. Reduce or increase the amount of ghee according to your liking.
  • water The recipe I've used has 2.5 cups of water to one Cup of Suji. You can add 2 cups of water. The amount of water you use could be increased based on how good the flavor of the rava, and if you prefer an pudding-like consistency.
